Our Story
Unique Bed & Breakfast Mountain View
Bed and Breakfast Mountain View was designed and built by legendary Hawaii artists Linus and Jane Chao. The purpose-built house served as a Bed and Breakfast and the private art studio of Linus and Jane. The main house was architecturally designed according to Chinese philosophies and the artists’ goals to maximize beauty, harmony, prosperity, and comfort to occupants.
The house faces Mauna Kea, with spectacular views of the top of the mountain. The river that flows between the house and the mountain is important in Chinese philosophy to ensure those who live in the house live healthy and long lives. The house is U-shaped in design like a person sitting upright with hands holding the two arms of the house, ensuring an incredibly stable structure.
The first floor of the house has two large multi-function rooms, one is 1,000 sq. ft. in size and another room is 500 sq. ft. These rooms served as art studios of Linus and Jane where they painted brush paintings and watercolors, taught art classes, exhibited their artwork, and hosted family reunions and friends. These rooms and the property are perfect for hosting conferences, yoga retreats, weddings, a future restaurant, or any other purpose limited only by one’s imagination. The large, well-designed kitchen and dining rooms were perfect to host Bed and Breakfast guests from all over the world, and to entertain the many friends and family of Linus and Jane who are gourmet cooks. A separate laundry room and pantry provide ample space to serve the needs of a Bed and Breakfast.
The second floor of the house has four beautiful bedrooms in one arm of the U that hosted Bed and Breakfast guests. Two bedrooms have private bathrooms and two rooms have shared bathroom. The other arm of the U is a separate apartment with a bedroom, en suite bathroom, and a private office/living room. The middle of the second floor is a large living room with a built-in bar, home entertainment center, and more wall space to exhibit artwork.
This magnificent house sits on four acres of beautifully landscaped garden with a large fish pond. Linus and Jane personally designed every aspect of the pond and garden, selected and planted every tree and flower for beauty, fragrance, and overall harmony. Over the past 25 years, the garden and fish pond have matured and, when viewed from the house, provide a beautiful foreground surrounding the view of Mauna Kea, much like one of Linus’ watercolor paintings.
The fish pond is home to colorful koi, catfish, and tilapia. Next to the pond Linus built a large covered gazebo for friends to enjoy tea outdoors. There is also an outside kitchen to clean the freshly caught fish. Adjacent to the gazebo is a tea house that can be used as a meditation or music room as Linus originally designed.
In addition to two large water catchment tanks on the property, there is still a large portion of the grounds that can be developed for agricultural or commercial use. The potential for this property is limitless. It sits conveniently halfway between the town of Hilo and the Volcano National Park, visited year-round by tourists, students, and scientists from around the world. For over 20 years, Bed and Breakfast Mountain View consistently received the highest reviews on TripAdvisor both for the hospitality of Jane and Linus, and for the amazing home and location. This is a special property designed by artists who worked every day to beautify it. It will be impossible to find another property quite like it.
